TUI scrap all flights to popular Spanish destination amid urgent travel warning

Budget airline and holiday operator TUI has cancelled all flights to one of its main Spanish holiday destinations until November.

All routes to La Palma on the Canary Islands have been scrapped by TUI due to an ongoing volcanic eruption which saw more than 40 tremors strike the island over the weekend.

Due to the volcano showing no signs of slowing down anytime soon, the holiday operator has decided to halt all flights to the destination.

The volcano first erupted on September 19 and streams of lava have continued to flow destroying thousands of homes as well as filling the skies with volcanic ash, making air travel near impossible.

TUI issued an update on its website and said it would contact customers directly with flights cancelled up until November 3.

The statement reads: "Due to the ongoing situation we’ve unfortunately had to cancel all flights to La Palma departing up to and including 3 November 2021. All impacted customers will be contacted directly to discuss their options.

"We’d like to reassure customers due to travel to any other Canary Islands that our flights are currently operating as planned however we will continue to monitor the situation and contact them should their holiday be impacted.

"We’d like to thank our customers for their patience and understanding during this time."

The UK Government has now issued foreign travel advice urging holidaymakers planning to travel to the popular holiday island to "contact your tour operators/airlines."

The advice stated: "If you are in an affected area you should follow the advice of local authorities, including social media updates from Cabildo de La Palma.

"If you are planning to travel to the island imminently you are encouraged to contact your tour operators / airlines."
