Tui plane hits fence forcing Majorca-bound flight to be delayed for three hours

Tui passengers suffered a frustrating three-hour delay after a jet hit a fence while preparing for take-off, a holidaymaker says.

One of the Majorca-bound tourists told how they heard a loud "crunching noise" as the plane pushed back from its gate at Manchester Airport.

They were just moments away from taking off when the aircraft suffered the mishap and had to return to the gate.

Passengers were forced to disembark and wait inside the terminal after being given food vouchers to use inside the airport, the Manchester Evening News reports.

They were told to prepare for a three-hour delay while the plane was repaired.

Engineers were seen removing the lower winglets from the plane after the bump.

Flight TOM2668 was due to take off at about 7.15am on Saturday.

According to flight-tracking websites, the Boeing 737-800 took off for Palma just before 10.40am local time and touched down just under two hours later.

It was two hours and 45 minutes late, according to FlightAware.

Passenger Simon Finnegan said he heard the impact as the plane started to move back from the gate.

He said engineers were removing the lower winglets from the plane.

He said: "There was a bit of a crunching noise, we just looked at each other and thought 'that's not promising'.

"If it happened to your car you'd be expecting a big bill."

Tui did not confirm why the plane was delayed. Instead, it described it as a "technical issue".

A spokeswoman for the travel giant said: "We would like to apologise to customers for the delay on flight TOM2668 from Manchester to Palma this morning.

"This was due to a technical issue and the flight has now departed.

"We understand delays are frustrating for customers and thank them for their patience and understanding.”
