TUI holiday family arrive to find 'refurbished' 4-star Spanish hotel is building site

Devastated families arrived at their “refurbished” Spanish hotel for half-term holidays and found it was a building site.

Brits found unfinished construction work, diggers and piles of earth at the four-star SuneoClub hotel in Lloret de Mar on the Costa Brava.

One group, who booked the hotel through TUI, was so angry they flew home 24 hours after arriving.

Tourist Harry Cousins, 23, said: “It is an absolute shambles. We have never known anything like it.

“There are cranes moving pieces of metal into the water park and builders walking through the swimming pool area with hammers doing work on the slides.”

Harry, a salesman from Morden, south London, emailed the hotel before his family’s £3,000 seven-day holiday to check everything was ready and says he was told the refurbishment work had finished.

Recruitment consultant Liam Stuart, 28, and fiancée Kelsie, 27, a building firm manager, spent £2,600 on a two-week break to celebrate his recovery from a stroke.

Liam said: “The hotel looks nothing like the pictures on the website. There are walls where plasterboard is hanging off and plaster all over the floor. It’s just an absolute building site.”

The couple from Andover, Hants, are demanding a refund after moving to another hotel at Torremolinos.

“It was really poor and we asked to be moved. We didn’t even unpack our suitcases,” Liam added.

“TUI are still actively promoting the hotel on its website.

“I think they must have digitally enhanced the photos on the website because the hotel looks very white and clean looking, nothing like the real thing.”

The SuneoClub reopened last month after a refit but TUI has now admitted work won’t be finished until next week.

TUI said: “We are really sorry some holidays have been affected by ongoing construction work.

“This was due to be completed before customers arrived but due to unforeseen circumstances there was still significant disruption.

“We provided them with alternatives including moving to an alternative resort, receiving compensation or flying home.

"A small number of customers chose to fly home and will receive a full refund.”
