TUI cancels La Palma trips amid reports of "intense" activity from volcano

The UK's largest tour operator is axing trips to the Canary Island of La Palma amid new concerns over the ongoing volcanic eruption.

TUI has cancelled flights and holidays for at least three weeks after authorities reported "intense" activity around the Cumbre Vieja volcano, sending gas and ash up to 6,000 metres into the air, according to local officials.

Underground earthquakes shook the island earlier this week, while molten lava has spewed as far as the coastline causing extensive damage.

TUI stated: “Due to the ongoing situation we’ve unfortunately had to cancel all flights to La Palma departing up to and including October 27. All impacted customers will be contacted directly to discuss their options.

"We’d like to reassure customers due to travel to any other Canary Islands that our flights are currently operating as planned however we will continue to monitor the situation and contact them should their holiday be impacted.

"We’d like to thank our customers for their patience and understanding during this time."

Meanwhile, the travel group reported UK winter bookings were “trending strongly” after the recent government travel rules review.

TUI added: “We believe many customers will continue to want to secure their summer holidays in advance, with Turkey, Florida, Greece, and Cyprus the most popular destinations at present.

“With the strong indications of pent-up demand, we believe summer 2022 volumes will likely recover close to normalised levels of summer 2019.”
