Dec. 16--With the Hawks' 3-0 loss to the Avalanche on Tuesday night, Patrick Kane's streak of consecutive games with a point ended at 26 on an off night for the Hawks. There were few prime chances for Kane as the Avalanche focused on shutting him down. It also helped the Avalanche that goaltender Semyon Varlamov continued his strong play of late with 29 saves.
Varlamov haunting Hawks
If there is one goaltender who has the Hawks' number, it's Varlamov. He improved to 8-0 in his last nine appearances against the Hawks.
Wasted strong start
In the first period, the Hawks controlled the opening minutes in puck possession but the action turned after Artemi Panarin went off for a holding penalty. The Avalanche began generating more pressure in the Hawks zone, which culminated in a goal from Matt Duchene from the left circle.
Nothing doing in second
The Avalanche continued to put the pressure on to begin the second period and went ahead 2-0 early when Zach Redmond scored from the right circle. Redmond had been a healthy scratch since Dec. 1 and it was his first goal of the season.
Shaw high hit
Andrew Shaw might hear from the league office for a high hit he delivered to the Avalanche's Francois Beauchemin in the third period. Shaw went high on Beauchemin and appeared to leave his feet as their heads collided. Beauchemin had to go back to the dressing room for evaluation.
