Jo Cox: Death of an MP
9pm, BBC2

The Brexit campaign undoubtedly awakened something dismal in the national psyche around immigration and national identity. A week before the vote, and the day after Ukip unveiled its “Breaking Point” poster, brilliant young MP Jo Cox was murdered in her West Yorkshire constituency by far-right terrorist Thomas Mair. On the first anniversary of her death, this heartbreaking film traces both their trajectories. Ali Catterall

Tried and Tasted: The Ultimate Shopping List
8pm, Channel 4

The blind food-tasting series continues, with fresh tortellini, coffee and bangers on the menu. Michel Roux Jr, Fred Sirieix of First Dates fame, Jay Rayner, baker Stacie Stewart and foodie TV presenter Lucy Alexander offer the wit, with Rayner – a man who can’t help but greet sausage-tasting with a jolly cry of “It’s innuendo bingo!” – proving especially good value. Informative and funny, a good combination. Jonathan Wright

Broken
9pm, BBC1

The state-of-the-nation drama continues. The events of the previous night send the community reeling with shock, as Sean Bean’s Father Michael deals with guilt of his own. Meanwhile, Andrew is leaned on by his colleagues in the constabulary to back up their account of the night before, rather than what actually happened. Father Michael urges him to tell the truth, but with his job, family and faith at stake, will he make the right choice? Ben Arnold

Our Dream Hotel
9pm, Channel 5

Alex Polizzi has fronted travel docs and been a troubleshooter for restaurants, bakers and furniture-makers. Hotels, though, are her family business and area of expertise (see: The Hotel Inspector), which places her on especially solid ground for this latest fix show. Can Keith and Zoe bring their fancy London ways to the south-west and turn a rundown B&B in Devon into a boutique guest house? Will their relationship survive? Alex is here to offer stern but fair advice. John Robinson

Ryan Gander: The Idea of Japan
9pm, BBC4

British conceptual artist Ryan Gander is big in Japan but he’s also big on Japan. As part of BBC4’s season on the nation, he explores its highly developed and ever-mutating visual culture, touching on Tokyo street style, The Great Wave, geishas, samurai and cherry blossom trees. It’s filled with details and rich with symbolism, so close watching is rewarded. That way, you also won’t miss any of his profound musings on time. Ellen E Jones

The Putin Interviews
2am, Sky Atlantic

Having previously interviewed Fidel Castro and Hugo Chavez, Oliver Stone must have learned a thing or two about coups. Perhaps that helped the bullish Oscar-winner to land this Putin profile, made up of interviews conducted over a two-year period and simulcast with the US across four nights this week. Naturally, Vladimir Vladimirovich’s formative years, Ed Snowden and the current state of US-Russian relations are all on the agenda. Graeme Virtue

The Baby Boomers’ Guide to Growing Old
10pm, More4

Debut of a new series that claims to illuminate a new demographic phenomenon – the fact that post-65 retirement is now often measured in decades rather than years – but which is mostly a reality show. The conceit is that well-known personages – among them Edwina Currie, Kenny Lynch and Esther Rantzen – will explore different aspects of later life. Tonight, it’s love, with Henry Blofeld and Amanda Barrie running a dating agency. Andrew Mueller

Film choice

Full Metal Jacket (Stanley Kubrick, 1987) 10pm, ITV4
Kubrick’s clinical vision of the hell that was Vietnam. The first half focuses on the dehumanisation of American recruits through foul-mouthed abuse, led by real-life army sergeant R Lee Ermey; the second is a graphic illustration of the inhumanity of war. The overly schematic structure distances us from Matthew Modine’s Private “Joker” and his suffering comrades, but it remains a superb technical achievement. Paul Howlett
