Broken
9pm, BBC1
This new Jimmy McGovern drama (held over from last week) promises to be an essential exploration of desperate lives on the British breadline. In tonight’s opener, spiky but beleaguered Christina Fitzsimmons (Anna Friel) reaches the end of her financial and emotional tether. Sean Bean’s sad-eyed cleric Father Michael Kerrigan tries to help but finds a woman unable to accept assistance. The performances are superb, the writing exemplary, the sense of looming catastrophe unavoidable. Phil Harrison
The Chillenden Murders
9pm, BBC2
In 1996, Britain was shocked by the murders of Lin Russell and her daughter Megan, as well as the attempted killing of Russell’s nine-year-old daughter Josie. A year later, Michael Stone, a victim of sexual abuse while in the care system, was convicted of the murders, although that was not the end of the story. In this film, experts look at details of the crime, evidence found at the scene and the case presented against Stone in court. David Stubbs
Grayson Perry: What Britain Wants
9pm, Channel 4
Grayson Perry’s trump card as a documentary-maker is that he’s a good listener. And, at this moment in Britain’s history, with the nation seemingly divided into two factions staring at each other with hostile incredulity, a film by Perry about attitudes surrounding Brexit might be just what we need. Here, he explores political tribalism, national identity and our emotional reasons for practical decisions, before making art out of his investigations. PH
Diana: 7 Days That Shook the Windsors
9pm, Channel 5
Documentary revisiting the odd interregnum, nearly 20 years ago, immediately following the death of Princess Diana, during which a portion of Britain’s population underwent what the introduction correctly describes as a “collective nervous breakdown”. The story is told by those close to the events: members of the royal household, government and media. Whether one was swept up in the tumult, or baffled by it, this is absorbing viewing. Four to the Floor
12.05am, Channel 4
Stylish music show, filmed like a Vice shoot, and proposing the idea of a generation of millennials united by temporal poverty and artistic wealth. Tonight’s show features David Vujanic – who, among other things, is a satirist on Brexit – and Manchester grime linchpin Madam X, lately moved to that London. Meanwhile, Tottenham MC Oscar #Worldpeace brings hard-won wisdom and cheeky humour from his Recluse release. John Robinson
The Joy of Techs
8pm, Dave
In this new series, technophobe Marcus Brigstocke feuds with gadget evangelist Alexis Conran in the Top Gear tradition of essentially arbitrary challenges. There is no shortage of chemistry: prickly beanpole Brigstocke and former Real Hustle smoothie Conran have been BFFs for almost two decades, so the blokey banter flows freely in this opening double bill, as the pair dive into a French Alps triathlon and then try to survive a zombie apocalypse. Graeme Virtue
Tate Britain’s Great British Walks
9pm, Sky Arts
Gin might be quite the trendy tipple these days, but back in the 18th century the botanical bombshell was causing the sort of mayhem and madness depicted by the great English painter and satirist William Hogarth in his infamous 1751 print Gin Lane. Here, lifelong Hogarth fan Danny Baker joins art curator Gus Casely-Hayford for a ramble round the capital, retracing his steps and exploring the real-life settings for his wonderful works. Film choice
Le Havre (Aki Kaurismäki, 2011) 1.50am, Film4
The Finnish director of new one The Other Side of Hope made this whimsical drama as part of a projected ports trilogy. It has the ageing shoeshiner Marcel (André Wilms) taking Congolese teenager Idrissa (Blondin Miguel) under his wing, in a beguiling, beautifully shot portrait of a waterfront community that is also homage to French cinema. Paul Howlett
