Wanted In Paradise

7pm, BBC2

New series about people thinking they maybe want to move to somewhere really hot and good-looking but needing to get their flights out there paid for by a TV company first, just to be sure. Tonight, some people leave the grey skies of [insert UK market town here] for the balmy beaches and tropical billabongs of [insert foreign resort location here – probably Thailand or similar]. But will they be able to leave their families behind? High stakes stuff. Repeat for 18 weeks. Julia Raeside

Mary Portas: Secret Shopper

8pm, Channel 4

The no-nonsense retail goddess investigates the failings of businesses both big and small in a second undercover stint. Hallmark Foods has served the Buckinghamshire village of Burnham for 24 years, but a mishmash of stock and mutinous staff are among the problems facing the family-owned store. Keen to see the business ditch its farcical image – which she likens to a Harry Enfield sketch – Mary serves up home truths for owner Keshu and supervisor Dean before masterminding an overhaul. Hannah J Davies

Inside The Commons

9pm, BBC2

Final instalment of Michael Cockerell’s four-part rummage around the House of Commons. This episode considers the future of parliament, both as idea and building. Cockerell talks to speaker John Bercow and backbencher Zac Goldsmith about their ideas for reform, while around them an expensive building operation attempts to keep the Palace of Westminster from crumbling into the Thames. Elsewhere, the events team look into hosting fashion shows and film premieres. Andrew Mueller

Immigration Street

10pm, Channel 4

Taking a look at the diverse residents of Derby Road – known locally as “the jungle” – in Southampton, the plan for Immigration Street was to observe how a new wave of arrivals from eastern Europe and Portugal have joined the established immigrant community of Indians, Bangladeshis, Pakistanis and West Indians. However, when filming on the programme went public, the documentary itself became the story. Soon the crew were threatened while MPs and councillors called for it to be stopped. The furore is played out on screen. Ben Arnold

Childbirth: All Or Nothing

10.45pm, BBC1

Afterbirth smoothie anyone? This and various other slightly more appetising childbirth options are under discussion in this intriguing one-off documentary, which follows a quartet of women as they prepare for imminent motherhood. If liquidised placenta isn’t your bag, the film will also be exploring lotus births (in which the baby’s umbilical cord is left connected until it detaches itself), caesarean sections and the desire of one woman to give birth on her houseboat. Each to their own … Phil Harrison

Critical

9pm, Sky1

Jed Mercurio of Line Of Duty fame creates a new medical drama starring Lennie James (also Line Of Duty), Kimberley Nixon (Fresh Meat) and Claire Skinner (Outnumbered), among others. The format is one hour with one patient in the critical first moments following their incapacitation. The focus is much more on the medical procedural elements than the love lives and career ambitions of the staff. It’s a refreshing shot in the arm for the genre and the pace is breakneck from the off. Julia Raeside

The South Bank Show

9pm, Sky Arts 1

Melvyn Bragg’s long-running arts strand returns. We begin with a profile of the star of Wolf Hall and man of the moment, Mark Rylance. So what do we learn? That Rylance is a risk-taker certainly, a man who once mortgaged his own flat to start a theatre company; and that Rylance can give both big theatrical turns (such as Rooster in Jerusalem) and detailed, nuanced screen performances. We probably knew that already but it’s still revealing to hear about Rylance’s work and working methods in own words. Jonathan Wright
