The Bank: A Matter of Life and Debt
9pm, BBC2
The BBC’s charm offensive on behalf of high-street banks concludes with more jauntily presented debt-consolidation action from NatWest in Huddersfield. We’re clearly dealing with bankers not gangsters here, but for all the participants’ amiability, this series has felt distinctly unsatisfactory. Britain’s £1.47tn debt mountain is treated as simply one of those unfortunate facts of life we must accept, rather than a product of gross recklessness. Slight, at best. Phil Harrison
Virgin Atlantic: Up in the Air
9pm, ITV
As Richard Branson, the happy lion, celebrates his airline’s 30th birthday, ITV cameras follow staff while the marimbas of mild peril indicate there may be trouble ahead. They’re losing money and need not to: so the stakes are, in the vaguest possible terms, set. A voiceover from British TV god Peter Egan goes a long way to illuminate an otherwise straightforward corporate video, as does a heartwarming storyline about 58-year-old Katrine, a sunny Virgin desk clerk desperate to join cabin crew. Like Peggy in Hi-de-Hi! longing to be a Yellowcoat. Julia Raeside
Benefits By the Sea: Jaywick
9pm, Channel 5
Yet another opportunity to gawp in sanctimonious horror at some of your less fortunate fellow citizens. Jaywick, near Clacton-on-Sea in Essex, has been consistently ranked one of the most deprived towns in Britain, with the result that half its population at any given moment seems to be beard-scratching broadsheet writers or prurient film-makers. Jaywick has been previously monstered by Channel 5 in Benefits Britain, and now gets a four-part series to itself. It is hoped that the locals are charging hefty appearance fees. Andrew Mueller
Not Safe for Work
10pm, Channel 4
Against her better judgment, Katherine (the excellent Zawe Ashton) helps department head Danny out of a pickle after he emerges from a sturdy and comprehensive bender with Angela to a looming grilling from the minister about what he’s been up to, work-wise, for the past year. Meanwhile, a drinks do welcoming Katherine and Nat to the department turns out to be ill-timed, particularly after she reveals a shocking secret to Anthony. A series straddling comedy and drama that is better than anything else around at the moment. Ben Arnold
UnREAL
10pm, Lifetime
Created by a former producer on The Bachelor, this brash US drama about the inner workings of a reality show is a wholly cautionary tale. Disgraced producer Rachel is keeping a low profile at work following a breakdown. However, she’s soon embroiled in dirty tricks, stirring tensions between the women vying for British socialite Adam’s attention. As exec producer Quinn orders her crew to use increasingly underhand tactics, just how many perfectly manicured toes will Rachel tread on for TV gold? Hannah J Davies
Penny Dreadful
10pm, Sky Atlantic
In a world full of smirking critics, it was always tempting fate for this series to have the word “dreadful” in its title. Yet, while an outlandish premise involving established fictional characters and a borderline comical predilection for gore did not help in theory, in practice this show has succeeded in establishing its own rules and living well by them. In the last of this series, Vanessa, having pitted herself against Evelyn, finds herself embroiled in a colossal struggle, while Ethan is involved in a bloody and tragic rampage. David Stubbs
Imagine: Beware of Mr Baker
10.35pm, BBC1
A modern classic among rockumentaries, in which director Jay Bulger sets out to interview former Cream drummer and notorious ex-junkie Ginger Baker, whom many consider one of the best sticksmen who ever lived. Bulger finds him skint, arthritic and festering with fury. It’s a sad and horribly revealing film, from which neither subject nor inquisitor emerge looking good: Bulger’s interview technique essentially amounts to repeatedly poking a rattlesnake with a stick, until it rears up and bites him in the face. Ali Catterall
