The Secret Life Of Four-Year-Olds
8pm, Channel 4

What do pre-schoolers do when there are no adults around? In a nursery equipped with cameras, we get to find out, and it’s certainly revealing. For example, we see the contrast between rough play specialist Chaim and Christian, who’s so particular he’s “a bit of an old man”. Educational neuroscientist Dr Paul Howard-Jones and developmental psychologist Dr Sam Wass offer learned comment on what we’re seeing. The conversation of the kids themselves is laugh-out-loud delightful: “If he troubles you, just bite him … ” Jonathan Wright

The Flash
8pm, Sky1

Back after a hiatus, this DC Comics-inspired spin-off from Arrow sees fast-moving crime scene investigator/crimefighter Barry Allan continue his quest to avenge his mother’s death. Tonight features Prison Break buddies Wentworth Miller and Dominic Purcell united again as Captain Cold and Heat Wave, looking to provoke a showdown with the Flash, which he eventually takes up. From the self-referential plot twist to lines about “finding a way to catch Cold”, you feel no one involved is taking it entirely seriously. David Stubbs

The Gift
9pm, BBC1

From the makers of Long Lost Family comes another series packed full of tearjerking reunions, as Matt Baker and Mel Giedroyc help members of the public to get in touch with people to whom they owe an apology or wish to thank for a brave gesture. This first episode sees two emotionally fraught meetings, as a former soldier searches for the colleague who rescued him from an IRA attack, and a 74-year-old woman tells her side of the story to the first love whom she never forgot. Hannah J Davies

Inside The Commons
9pm, BBC2

Michael Cockerell’s fascinating lid-lifter goes deep into parliament’s annoyingly byzantine processes. After the silly pomp of the state opening, the focus is on private members’ bills, which should be a valuable way for individual MPs to make a difference. First there’s a lottery, then a queuing system that sees members waiting outside the relevant office 48 hours early, like it’s the Apple Store. At the climax, a Lib Dem’s effort to make the bedroom tax less cruel runs up against oozing filibusterer Jacob Rees-Mogg. Jack Seale

Young War Widows
9pm, ITV

During the UK’s long involvement in Afghanistan, 453 British soldiers were killed. Each of these deaths bereaved a circle of family and friends but, as soldiers often marry relatively early in life, many also made widows of very young women. This film meets three of them. Sensibly, the film-makers recognise that there’s no need to oversell anything, and simply let their subjects tell their stories and recall their memories, with a stoical candour as impressive as it is heartbreaking. Andrew Mueller

Rhod Gilbert’s Work Experience
10pm, BBC2

A fifth series of Gilbert’s work experiences begins with some jobs we are told are “the most dangerous in the UK”. Whereas the most terrifying prospect facing most inductees is forgetting their email passwords, for deep sea fishermen it soon becomes clear that the prospect of clocking on at 4.30am is the easy part. Luckily Gilbert is in the hands of a crew who, as he puts it, have seen more fish than Pingu’s potty. Forget being married to the sea; Gilbert soon seems keen on an emergency annulment. Mark Jones

Uncle
10pm, BBC3

Carpet salesman and wannabe musician Andy (Nick Helm) has songwriter’s block. He also has a restraining order to prevent any contact with his nephew after last series’s inadvertent ecstasy consumption. But considering this is a sitcom centred on slacker Andy and nervy nephew Errol’s unlikely friendship, this series two opener sees it continue regardless, the 13-year-old secretly visiting his uncle and helping him write one of the comedy musical numbers that usually punctuate the plot. Rachel Aroesti
