Tube strikes in September suspended amid new talks on night service

The Rail, Maritime and Transport union has suspended planned tube stoppages on 8 and 10 September amid new talks on the planned night service.

Talks over the longrunning dispute were continuing on Wednesday after London Underground delayed the start of the night tube, which had been scheduled for 12 September.

An RMT spokesman said: “As the implementation of night tube has been suspended until we reach agreement and we are continuing discussions and negotiations on all related matters, RMT has suspended the strike action called for September 8 and 10.

“However we remain in dispute and all industrial action called to not cooperate with night tube at local level, including modelling and trials, remains in place. If further negotiations prove negative then further industrial action will be called in defence of our agreements and for proper pay for our members.”

The RMT, Aslef, Unite and TSSA have expressed concern over new rosters and shift patterns, work-life balance and the viability of running the service. The dispute triggered several strikes in the summer that caused widespread disruption.

Nick Brown, the managing director of LU, said last week he believed that an agreement was not far off that would protect the work-life balance of staff and be affordable, sustainable and fair. The plan is for the night tube to start this autumn, although a final date will only be announced as part of a final deal.

The night tube is planned to run throughout Friday and Saturday nights on the main sections of the Central, Piccadilly and Northern lines, and on the whole of the Jubilee and Victoria lines.
