Tube strike: London Underground workers to hold 24-hour walkout on Thursday

London commuters face major disruption next week after tube drivers announced they will strike on Thursday

Members of the Aslef union will walk out for 24 hours from 12:01 on 5 October meaning all London underground lines will be running a drastically reduced service.

The row centres on proposed pay deal which gives union members the option to work a four-day, 36-hour week.

Aslef, which represents the majority of Tube drivers, also claims transport bosses have reneged on a commitment to give its members a reduced number of weekend shifts.

The strike will hit thousands of football fans travelling to Wembley for England’s World Cup qualifier against Slovenia.

Transport for London had hoped to reach a deal with union bosses in talks this week but no agreement was reached. Further discussions are scheduled with the conciliatory service Acas early next week to try to resolve the dispute

Nigel Holness, director of network operations for London Underground, said: "Should the planned strike action go ahead, there will be substantial disruption.

"We will do everything possible to ensure customers can get around on alternative transport services and have the right information to help them do this.

"We are committed to ensuring that our employees are able to maintain a good balance between their work and personal lives and we have been working closely with the unions on new ways to achieve this.

"I encourage the Aslef leadership to continue working with us constructively rather than moving towards unnecessary strike action."
