Tube strike: Five tips if you are thinking of cycling into work tomorrow

Thousands of Londoners are planning the best way to get into work tomorrow during the second Tube strike of the summer.

From 6.30pm on Wednesday members of four unions – RMT, TSSA, Aslef, and Unite – will down tools over London mayor Boris Johnson’s planned introduction of night Tubes on 12 September.

On-going talks failed on Monday with union bosses warning that further strikes could be in the works. Last July the worst strike in 13 years brought the capital to a virtual standstill with tens of thousands of London’s commuters walking, running and cycling into work.

London Cycling Campaign, a charity ensuring the capital’s cyclists have a voice, offer their top tips if you are thinking of riding into work.

  1. Look up a quiet cycle route avoiding main roads and junctions by using the London Cycling Campaigns’ Route Planner. Often, these quiet routes can be quicker as there's no big junctions or traffic lights to slow you down.

  2. Be extra careful near large lorries an avoid positioning yourself in a drivers’ blind spot.  Read our advice for safer cycling around lorries.

  3. Be an assertive cyclist. You have the same right to use the streets as other road users. It's safer to ride at least a metre from the kerb or parked cars so you can avoid opening car doors, plus you're more visible to other road users, such as those pulling out from side roads or approaching from behind. (But, if you feel like you’re being hassled by drivers, just let them pass until you’re confident holding your position.)

  4. Be law-abiding and considerate. Slow down and give pedestrians lots of space on shared paths, where they always have priority.

  5. Make sure you lock your bike securely at your destination so it’s still there when you want to ride home! Read our guide, here.
