Tube map shows how many calories you can burn by walking in London

London Underground ()

After a long day at work, it can be hard to follow widely-known health advice and get off the train a stop early to walk home.

But a new London Underground Tube map could make leaving your train seat a little easier, by showing the amount of calories you can burn by walking between stops.

Research has shown that it takes 4 minutes to get from Oxford Circus to Piccadilly Circus on the Tube, but taking the 11 minute walk would burn 42 calories – or the equivalent of half a chocolate digestive biscuit.

Meanwhile, walking from London Bridge to Tower Hill takes 17 minutes, compared with a 12 minute Tube journey. That trip could help you burn 46 calories.

GP Wayne Osborne, who put together the map for Treated.com, said that walking doesn’t always take that much longer than staying put on the Tube, according to the Metro.

He said: “If you want an economical way to get in shape, and lower your risk of serious illness, then hopping off the tube one or two stops early and walking the rest of the way is a great way to keep fit and burn off some extra calories."

Walking can prevent the risk of chronic illnesses including heart disease, type 2 diabetest, asthma, stroke and some cancers, according to the NHS.

Studies have also shown that by standing up and walking at regular intervals, workers who otherwise spend hours at their desks can prevent breast cancer by 21 per cent, colon cancer by a quarter, and half the risk of high blood pressure, according to the organisation Sitting is the New Smoking.
