Tua Tagovailoa declaring for NFL Draft makes Giants’ pick more valuable

The New York Giants finished the 2019 season with a 4-12 record and by virtue have earned themselves the No. 4 overall selection in the upcoming NFL Draft.

Recently it was thought that they were out of the Chase Young sweepstakes, that he would be gone before they picked, but recent developments have changed that thinking.

Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa declared for the NFL Draft on Monday and will be a Top 5 pick, maybe even higher. His entry into the draft will create a race to the top and will prompt some teams to attempt to trade into the Top 5 to grab a quarterback, whether it be Tua, LSU’s Joe Burrow — the Heisman Trophy winner — or Oregon’s Justin Herbert.

From the New York Post:

Tua Tagovailoa’s decision makes the Giants’ No. 4 pick in the draft more valuable, if they choose to trade it for a haul of selections and/or players. The three teams picking after the Giants — the Dolphins, Chargers and Panthers — each could be drafting a quarterback in the first round and there could be some jockeying for the Giants’ pick. Despite Tagovailoa’s recent hip surgery, he is still considered one of the top prospects in the draft.

Cincinnati has the first pick and will likely use it on a quarterback. The next two teams — Washington and Detroit — are said to not be favoring taking a quarterback, but you never know. They could trade with a team who does and take a package of picks.

Giants general manager Dave Gettleman could trade out, too, but that’s not his style. If his cards break right, he could still land Young if Washington and Detroit trade back.

This is beginning to become intriguing for the Giants, but Gettleman rarely does what most believe he should do, so temper your expectations here.
