SHANGHAI -- A new Tsutaya Bookstore, the second such outlet in China, was unveiled to the press on Monday ahead of its opening on Thursday.
In China, multipurpose bookstores that sell stationery and miscellaneous goods and also have cafes are gaining popularity. Tsutaya Books Co. said it aims to open 100 stores in China in the future.
The new store was renovated from a two-story structure built in 1924 that was used as a social center for Westerners.
Out of about 50,000 books, Japanese books account for 20%. The president of Tsutaya's overseas subsidiary said, "As the number of foreign visitors to Japan decreases due to the novel coronavirus, we would like to aggressively expand our business overseas."
There has been a boom in bookstores in China, and stores have opened one after another across the country. Tsutaya Books has been receiving requests to open stores in China for several years. The first store opened in October in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province.
