Tsunami waves hit Japan and Russia after 8.8-magnitude earthquake

  • An 8.8-magnitude earthquake off Russia’s eastern coast triggered widespread tsunami warnings and advisories across the Pacific, impacting regions from Hawaii and California to Japan and Russia.
  • Tsunami waves struck parts of Japan’s Hokkaido and Russia’s Kuril Islands, with a 1ft tidal surge recorded near Alaska’s Amchitka.
  • Hawaii was upgraded to a tsunami warning, prompting an emergency proclamation and the suspension of commercial flights at Hilo airport to aid evacuations.
  • Northern California’s coast, including Crescent City, was placed under a tsunami warning, while more than 1.9 million people in Japan were asked to evacuate as a precaution.
  • Although initial waves in Japan were smaller than forecast, officials cautioned that larger subsequent waves could still arrive, and the earthquake ranks as the sixth strongest ever recorded globally.
