7.5 magnitude earthquake hits Papua New Guinea

A tsunami threat came and went after a 7.5 magnitude earthquake hit Papua New Guinea on Tuesday morning ET, per NOAA and USGS.

What's happening: The strongest effects of the earthquake were felt in Kokopo, with a population of 26,000, and Rabaul, with a population of 8,000. Kokopo experienced "very strong to severe" shaking, consistent with causing moderate to heavy damage. NOAA is not anticipating a tsunami threat to Hawaii or the West Coast of the U.S. or Alaskan coast.
