The 19th century Japanese artist Tsukioka Yoshitoshi is known as the last great master of traditional Japanese woodblock printing. In retrospect, his works, founded on the Ukiyo-e printmaking, are seen as inspiration behind the manga and anime cartoons that are prevalent in Japan today.
This exhibition showcases a series of his prints, designed in the last seven years of his life, demonstrating his skill and imagination. The images draw from moon-related stories in Japanese and Chinese history, legends, literature, theatre and folklore. The characters of these stories are diverse, from stoic warriors and samurai to townspeople, courtesans and demons.
