
What’s new: Tsinghua University and Peking University, China’s most prestigious seats of higher education, both ranked among the top 20 in the QS World University Ranking released Wednesday.
Tsinghua and Peking, both based in Beijing, ranked 17th and 18th on the list, respectively. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the U.S. took the top spot, followed by the University of Oxford in the U.K.
The top 10 includes five schools from the U.S., four from the U.K. and one from Switzerland. Two universities in Singapore — the National University of Singapore and the Nanyang Technological University — were listed as the best schools in Asia
The background: The QS World University Ranking have been released annually since 2004 by Quacquarelli Symonds, a U.K.-based company that specializes in analyzing data about higher education. In last year’s ranking, Tsinghua ranked 15th and Peking came in at 23rd.
