TSB to launch 'pop-up' banks in community centres following branch closures

TSB is to launch a network of ‘pop-up’ banks around the UK to help customers affected by its branch closures.

The 43 sites will offer customers help with banking needs such as making payments, getting help with products and services, as well as assistance with bereavements.

The first 18 are being launched this month, with the others to follow between now and the summer. They will be located in community buildings such as libraries, village and town halls, community centres and council offices.

The move follows TSB’s decision to close around 80 branches last year and 160 this year - almost halving its branch network.

The bank has introduced 100 mobile adviser roles to deliver the new service, saying most of the pop-up locations are in communities where it takes people more than 20 minutes to travel to their nearest TSB branch.

TSB is also working with technology companies Diebold Nixdorf and Paysafe on a pilot scheme which will allow customers to use a digital platform to deposit cash in some local shops or supermarkets. The scheme is being trialled in Glasgow, Newcastle, Manchester, Liverpool and Birmingham.

It is also taking part in the Community Access to Cash Pilots in Denny, Cambuslang and Hay-on-Wye.

TSB’s director of branch banking Carol Anderson said: “Although we’ve seen a significant rise in customers using digital banking, we know accessing banking services and cash remains important to many customers and we’re always looking for innovative and inclusive ways to help them.

“The pop-up service will support our customers in parts of the country where it takes longer to get to a branch. The pop-ups and future access to cash pilot will test demand for these types of services, giving us insight on what more we can do for customers in the future.”

The Scottish locations are:

  • Dalkeith
  • Huntly
  • Kilbirnie
  • Berwick-Upon-Tweed
  • Anstruther
