TSB to close 70 branches, including one in Greater Manchester - full list

TSB has announced plans to close 70 bank branches next year - including one in Greater Manchester.

The bank has said the closures are in response to declining use as more customers opt for digital services.

Closures will take place between April and June 2022 and will result in 150 job cuts.

Affected staff will be offered alternative roles.

It comes after the bank chain announced a round of closures last year with 164 branches shut down - a third of its sites across the country.

A year before that, in November 2019, 82 branches were closed.

The bank's closure programme has been pushed forward due to the impact of the pandemic and people's banking and shopping habits taking a more online space.

TSB’s chief customer officer Robin Bulloch said: “Closing branches is an incredibly difficult decision to take, but we have to respond to the changes in the way people bank and provide the right mix of services for all our customers now and into the future.

“These changes allow us to maintain an extensive branch presence across the country.

"They are accompanied by a significant investment programme to upgrade branches to better suit customer needs. And, where it takes longer to get to the nearest branch, we will introduce more ‘pop-up’ services in communities.”

The branches that will be shut down carry out third fewer transactions than TSB's national average, the company said.

Another reason is that there is a Post Office or free-to-use ATM within a mile of each site.

TSB added this morning that there will be no closures where it is the only bank left in town - 10 more pop-up branches will also be opened.

The pop-up sites will be located in Bishops Stortford, Camberley, Fort William, Greenwich, Harlesden, Louth, Redcar, Stranraer, Thurso and Tunbridge Wells.

TSB is the latest among other banks closing chains in the UK.

Last month, Llyod's and Halifax said they will close 48 sites and have already announced 100 more closures in 2021.

Virgin Money also announced in September that it will close 31 branches as it "adapts to changing consumer demand"

Before August this year, Santander shut down 111 sites with only 425 left nationwide.

HSBC also announced it would close 82 branches in 2021.
