'Trying to overlap him' - Danny Simpson's amusing view of Hatem Ben Arfa's Bolton wondergoal

It was one of the Premier League's greatest ever solo goals.

And on April 9, 2012, nobody had a better view of Hatem Ben Arfa's wondrous run and finish in a 2-0 win over Bolton Wanderers than his Newcastle team-mate Danny Simpson.

The pair linked up very successfully down Newcastle's right-hand side between 2010 and 2013 and were an integral part of the Magpies team who came so close to qualifying for the Champions League under Alan Pardew in 2012.

Simpson was a guest on the ITV Football podcast with Mark Pougatch and former Newcastle winger Andros Townsend this week, recollecting a career that saw him win the Premier League with both Manchester United and Leicester, as well as Championship promotion with Newcastle and QPR.

But when asked about the best goal he has been involved in, Simpson, unsurprisingly, offered a brilliant recollection of his front seat view of Ben Arfa at his very best.

"Ben Arfa [against Bolton] when I was at Newcastle," Simpson said.

"I was trying to overlap him and I couldn't catch him!

"He picked the ball up in the middle and he turned and ran through the middle of the park. A few people tried to hack him and he dinked it over their feet, ran over another player and slid it in.

"I just remember running up trying to catch him and that was a goal I will always remember."
