Trying to beat the heat

Pedestrians wait in the shade for a traffic light to change in Shibuya Ward, Tokyo, amid scorching heat on Monday afternoon. As of 5 p.m., the high temperature for the day had exceeded 35 C at 186 locations nationwide, including a reading of 36.3 C in Tokyo's Nerima Ward, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency. The mercury soared to 39.3 C in Ibigawa, Gifu Prefecture, marking the first time the temperature has topped 39 C this year in Japan.
