Try the logic test that stumps the 'average adult' but kids pass with flying colours

Do you prize yourself on being a logical thinker? If you answered yes, then this is the test for you. If you were being truthful with yourself, then it should go without saying just how useful critical thinking can be. Logic, the study of reasoning and argument, can prove helpful in all walks of life.

Well, hopefully you're not as proud as you are logical, or you might want to look away now. The experts over at Atom Learning have devised a series of visual riddles - and it's bad news for adults.

While they say most 10-year-old kids will breeze through the non-verbal reasoning quiz, they will reportedly 'stump the average adult'. Take a go below and see how you get on. Or even better, challenge your kids to try and ace the questions.

Question 1

Hint: the length of the line is irrelevant (Atom Learning)

Atom Learning explains that the top letter represents the colour of the shapes, where 'A' is code for grey, 'B' is code for black, and 'C' is code for white. Meanwhile, the bottom letter represents the orientation of the shapes. 'Y' means the shapes face away from each other, while 'Z' means the shapes face each other.

As such, the correct answer is A - 'CY', since the shapes in the final image are white and face away from each other.

Question 2

Hint: think about the colour of the shapes (Atom Learning)

A, B, C, and D all follow the same rule, according to the experts. "If the circular shapes face the same direction, the circles will be white. If the circles face different directions, the circles will be white and black."

Once you've noticed this, you should be able to work out E is the odd one out because it doesn't follow the rule.

Question 3

Hint: the gap in the blocks is key (Atom Learning)

As the pros explain, the 3D shape is four blocks long and three blocks wide, meaning it is a 4 x 3 shape. Therefore, you can rule out D, a 4 x 4 shape straightway.

Next, you can ignore E, since there are three top block in the front row, including an overhanging block in the middle. You can also cancel out A and B on account of the overhanging block in the second row. By process of elimination, you're then left with C, which shows the correct 2D plan.

Question 4

Hint: think about the direction the shapes face (Atom Learning)

In this test, each row uses the same accent colour: black for the top row, grey for the middle, and white for the bottom row. C is therefore wrong.

Once you notice the shapes sat the same in each box diagonally down and to the right, you'll also know E is wrong.

But how do you choose between A, B and D? Moving diagonally down and to the right, each box is rotated 90° clockwise, meaning A is the right answer.

Question 5

Hint: one of the options is a dud cube (Atom Learning)

The experts say you can work out this question once you notice the following. E is a dud cube because there are no circles on the net.

C and D break the opposite rule as they show faced next to each other that are in opposite positions on the net. The three-quarter ring and triangle should not be next to each other in C, and the crown and mushroom should be opposite each other in D.

Meanwhile, A breaks the orientation rule. On the net, the crown points away from the triangles whereas in A, the the crown is pointing towards the triangle.

Once you've worked out the above, it should be simple to pick out B as your answer.
