Truth behind adorable baby platypus photo has everyone in hysterics

A photo of an incredibly adorable baby platypus went viral this week, with the entire internet completely overwhelmed by its cuteness.

It became the subject of countless memes which have delighted people around the world.

But a few eagle-eyed people spotted something a bit, well, not quite right about it.

The photo shows a hand cradling what looks like a baby platypus - which are also known as puggles.

But it turns out it's not actually a platypus at all - in fact, it's not an animal at all.

So, sorry to break it to those who believed it, but it's actually a rock.

Yep. A rock.

It's a sculpture made by Serbian fantasy artist Vladimir Matić-Kuriljov - and many people were quick to point it out.

And whilst many people are disappointed they were fooled by the artist, they were also impressed by his work.

Others have been sharing real photos of baby platypuses to show what they actually look like.

One twitter user said: "Ok even if that picture of a baby platypus is fake the real thing is just as good".

Another added: "It’s time for me to speak up. The viral baby platypus is made of stone and everyone thinks it’s real, I just can’t let this go on any longer. It’s a beautiful work of art."

Vladimir created the sculpture out of a plastic-like material called super sculpey, which he then painted it with acrylic paints.

The artist has also posted a snap of a baby walrus which - despite the size - looks just like the real thing.

He posted the 'Stone Platypus Baby' to ArtStation, a site that showcases artists' work and has currently received over 50,000 views.

And admitted it is "Probably the cutest thing I ever made".
