Trust Me's unnerving tale of brain injured patients mysteriously dying chills

The first series of BBC1's Trust Me starred Jodie Whittaker as a whistleblowing nurse who impersonates a doctor.

Now that Jodie is whizzing round the galaxy as The Doctor (Who), the medical drama returns with a brand new cast.

It stars Alfred Enoch, Ashley Jensen and John Hannah, and the action has moved to Glasgow.

Alfred plays a soldier, Corporal Jamie McCain, who is in a hospital neurological ward after suffering a spinal injury during an attack in Syria.

Then patients start to die mysteriously...

Jamie investigates, but his paralysis makes it difficult and dangerous work.

With all the staff hiding secrets, finding the truth seems impossible.

As Jamie’s behaviour becomes increasingly erratic, we start to wonder whether there even is a killer – or his imagination is playing tricks on him.

Doctor Who set for massive change next series over fall in ratings

Four Weddings star John plays the head of the unit, Dr Archie Watson, whose habit of cracking bad jokes hides a seedier, more sinister side.

Archie spends most of his time and energy avoiding work and covering his own back, and he’s a little too familiar with female colleagues.

But could his bad behaviour include bumping off patients?

‘It’s a great thriller, it looks terrific and there is loads of young talent in it – it’s a wicked piece of entertainment,’ promises John, who did his homework to get the medical details just right.

‘It was a case of knowing the meaning of what you’re saying and the pronunciation.

'I read about what I needed to know in terms of the injuries and what that meant in terms of prognosis.’

Ashley Jensen on filming in cold water, in Glasgow, in November – brrrr!

Making Trust Me meant a welcome – but chilly – trip home for Scots Ashley Jensen and John Hannah.

For Ashley, who filmed Ugly Betty in LA, the weather was a shock though...

‘The scenes in the hydro pool were particularly challenging,’ she says.

‘Alfie Enoch and I were in the water for 12 hours, in an old disused pool in Glasgow, in November.

'It was freezing. In fact at one point we had hot water bottles actually in the pool with us!’

Former Extras star Ashley Jensen relishes a non-comedy role in dark drama, Trust Me, playing physio Debbie Dorrell (BBC/© Red Production Company)

She was attracted to playing head physio Debbie Dorrell because it was very different to her usual roles.

‘I’m predominantly known for comedy so when I saw this script I was really drawn to it.

'As a psychological thriller it takes twists and turns, and it’ll hopefully keep the audience guessing right until the end.’

John adds: ‘I haven’t worked in Scotland for 10 years.

'Then, strangely, last year (new BBC1 thriller) The Victim and Trust Me were both filmed in Scotland.

'It was nice being back and spending some time with friends.’

- Trust Me, Tues, 9pm, BBC1
