Trust Me: Everything you need to know as the medical drama returns without Jodie Whittaker

Medical thriller Trust Me is back for a second series – with a brand new cast and premise.

The BBC series’ critically acclaimed first season aired in 2017 and starred Jodie Whittaker as Cath, a nurse who loses her job after whistle blowing. In a desperate bid to provide for her family, she ends up stealing her best friend’s identity to pose as a doctor.

With Whittaker now otherwise engaged playing a very different Doctor, the show’s creators have decided to start afresh with a brand new story and setting for the second instalment.

Here’s everything you need to know as the hospital drama returns.

What is Trust Me’s second season about?

Starting afresh: Alfred Enoch is the show's new star (Mark Mainz / BBC/ Red Production Company)

This time around, the show follows Corporal Jamie McCain, a soldier who is recovering from a spinal injury sustained during active service, which has left him temporarily paralysed.

While recuperating in a Glasgow hospital, he notes that few of his fellow patients on the ward are recovering as they should do and are instead dying in increasingly suspicious circumstances.

McCain is compelled to investigate the spate of deaths, but his injuries make things difficult – and are having a drastic impact on his judgement.

Discussing the premise of the second series, writer Dan Sefton said: “I just thought it was a really interesting idea to have someone who was previously really strong and fit and sort of physically defined themselves to become completely kind of broken and unable to do anything.

“And then the idea of them trying to, you know, investigate – getting a zest for life back, or a reason to live back, just because they have to do something to stop somebody else being killed.”

Who is in the cast of Trust Me?

Supporting cast: Alfred Enoch is joined by Ashley Jensen and John Hannah (Mark Mainz / BBC/ Red Production Company)

McCain is played by Alfred Enoch, who you’ll probably recognise from his turn as one of Harry Potter’s Gryffindor pals, Dean Thomas, in the film adaptations. He’s also appeared in four seasons of US legal drama How To Get Away With Murder as Wes Gibbins.

He’s joined by Four Weddings and a Funeral star John Hannah (who also recently appeared in BBC thriller The Victim) as a shady doctor, along with Catastrophe and Ugly Betty’s Ashley Jensen as a physiotherapist.

What time is Trust Me on TV?

Trust Me is on BBC One, April 16 at 9pm with episodes then set to air at the same time on subsequent Tuesdays.
