Jeremy Hunt yesterday completed the biggest U-turn in British political history – and buried boss Liz Truss’s flawed vision of an economic utopia.
The new Chancellor’s announcement didn’t quite complete the Tory Prime Minister’s humiliation.
But it must surely only be a matter of days before she is eventually forced from No10 by her own MPs.
Almost every aspect of Truss’s tax-busting mini-budget has been ripped up and put in the bin within three weeks.
Trussonomics was not connected to reality and was destined to fail.
Even her energy support package – the shield she used to deflect troublesome questions – hasn’t survived and will now only last six months instead of two years.
The Tories are a government in absolute chaos and Truss knows it.
The party’s powerful 1922 Committee also know it.
They are under pressure to change the rule that prevents Truss from being removed from power for 12 months if she fails to fall on her own sword.
This government is on life-support, which is why they will fight tooth and nail to avoid agreeing to an early general election.
They wouldn’t even be the second- largest party in Westminster if one was called tomorrow, experts have warned.
The SNP – the party the Conservatives have mocked and ridiculed for so long – would have more seats.
Truss was absent from the Commons when questions were being asked about her sacking Kwasi Kwarteng after he followed her orders in drawing their doomed mini-budget.
However, explanations, U-turns and climbdowns won’t repair the economic carnage she has caused.
Just ask those who face having to find an extra £500 every month to pay their mortgage.
