Trump will be visiting Scotland during his state visit on 3 June, and people are already planning protests

People in Edinburgh and beyond have been quick to react to the news that US President Donald Trump is planning to visit Scotland as part of his just-announced state visit to the UK on 3 June.

Twitter has been flooded with comments from people trying to gauge interest in holding large-scale protests, like the ones seen last year in Edinburgh city centre, which involved a giant balloon shaped like a baby version of Trump, and thousands of people taking to the streets in July 2018 to march from the Scottish Parliament to the Meadows

Protesters - including Scots comedian Janey Godley - also headed to Trump's Turnberry golf course in Aberdeenshire to 'greet' the president, who arrived by helicopter.

Protests planned for ex-Trump advisor Steve Bannon's talk in Edinburgh

Godley took to Twitter today to share her reaction to the news that the US President was heading back to Scotland, saying:

"So it's been in the news that Donald Trump is going to come back to Scotland.

"We hate ye. Most people I know from Scotland hate ye.

"So Donald if you come back to Scotland I'll be ready, I'll have my placard. Thousands of us will be ready."

The rest of the video was a bit too sweary to share, but involved her shouting her catchphrase "Trump is a c***"

Many other people - some from Edinburgh - shared their intention to protest. One said: "Won’t retweet due to language...but totally agree. I'll be there!"

And another added: "So a state visit to the UK from Donald Trump is being planned? Who is organising the protest? Get your marching shoes on!"

The US president will make a three-day state visit to the UK from 3 to 5 June 2019.

The president and First Lady Melania Trump will be a guest of the Queen and attend a ceremony in Portsmouth to mark the 75th Anniversary of D-Day. He will also hold talks with the prime minister at Downing Street, before heading to Scotland.
