President Donald Trump urged Republican holdouts to support the party's "big, beautiful" spending bill after it failed to pass the House Budget Committee, saying "we don't need 'GRANDSTANDERS'" in the GOP.
In a social media post, Trump said Republicans "MUST UNITE" behind the bill, claiming "Not only does it cut Taxes for ALL Americans, but it will kick millions of Illegal Aliens off of Medicaid to PROTECT it for those who are the ones in real need."
"The Country will suffer greatly without this Legislation, with their Taxes going up 65%. It will be blamed on the Democrats, but that doesn't help our Voters," Trump added. "STOP TALKING, AND GET IT DONE! It is time to fix the MESS that Biden and the Democrats gave us."
The message came shortly after the setback for the party, when five GOP lawmakers rejected the bill as it stands, with the vote ending 16-21 after they joined all Democrats in their rejection. Freedom Caucus member Chip Roy said he opposes the bill because it will increase the deficit.
"I have to now admonish my colleagues on this side of the aisle. This bill falls profoundly short. It does not do what we say it does with respect to deficits," Roy said. "Deficits will go up in the first half of the 10-year budget window and we all know it's true. And we shouldn't do that. We shouldn't say that we're doing something we're not doing," he added.
Republicans are set to continue negotiating throughout the weekend, with NBC News reporting that panel members are seeking to regroup as soon as Monday.
But even if the bill ends up passing the House, it also faces long odds in the Senate. A key Republican Senator, Ron Johnson, anticipated he won't vote for this version of the bill earlier this month, claiming that the current effort "actually increases" the budget deficit and is "doomed to fail."
