Former President Donald Trump is encouraging Republicans in Michigan to focus on Black voters in Detroit and other predominantly African American areas in the swing state, according to state GOP leaders. The Michigan GOP leaders recently met in Florida to strategize the Trump campaign's approach to winning the state in 2024, with a particular emphasis on southeast Michigan, which has significant minority voter populations critical of President Joe Biden.

The state GOP chair highlighted the importance of reaching out to African American and Hispanic voters across Michigan, including areas like Saginaw, Wayne County (home to metro Detroit), Muskegon, and other regions. Both Biden and Trump are expected to fiercely compete for Michigan, a state that flipped Democratic in 2020 and is crucial for both candidates' electoral prospects.

Recent Arab American protests over the Israel-Hamas conflict have influenced political dynamics in Michigan, with concerns raised by Democratic leaders in southeast Michigan about potential dissatisfaction among Black voters. While a February poll showed a decline in Black adults' approval of Biden compared to last year, there remains limited favorability towards Trump among this demographic.

Trump's campaign is particularly interested in targeting nontraditional Republican and traditional Democrat voters in southeast Michigan, focusing on areas like Wayne, Saginaw, Kent, and Ottawa counties. The Biden campaign has criticized Trump's outreach efforts, citing his past policies and actions as reasons for Michigan voters to reject his appeals.

Despite facing fundraising challenges and a short timeline, the Michigan GOP and Trump's campaign are intensifying their efforts in the state. The state party's new leadership is working to solidify its team and engage with donors, while Trump's campaign is expected to announce a lead person in Michigan soon. Biden's reelection team, led by the state's Democratic governor, has been active for months, emphasizing the importance of early outreach to Black and Hispanic voters in metro Detroit.

The urgency to secure Michigan's support was underscored in recent meetings between GOP chairs from major counties and senior Trump advisers, with a shared commitment to proactive strategies and immediate outreach initiatives for minority voters. The competitive landscape in Michigan is set to intensify as both parties gear up for the upcoming election.
