Trump urges ‘amazing’ Netanyahu to use a ‘softer touch’ with Hezbollah

  • US President Donald Trump publicly urged Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to adopt a "softer touch" in military actions against Hezbollah militants in Lebanon Wednesday, marking his latest rebuke to his partner in the conflict against Iran .
  • Trump and Netanyahu have previously disagreed over Israel's aggressive pursuit of Iran-backed Hezbollah, which is a key point in a limited interim agreement between the US and Iran.
  • Speaking at the G7 summit, Trump called Netanyahu "an amazing prime minister” who "gets a little excited sometimes." He continued, "We have a little dispute over Lebanon. I say you can do a little softer touch, Bibi. You don't have to knock down a building every time somebody walks into it that's from Hezbollah."
  • Trump also confirmed he had sent Netanyahu a copy of the "memorandum of understanding" reached with Iran after earlier reports suggested Israel's request to review it was denied.
  • The memorandum is intended to facilitate broader peace talks between the United States and Iran, which are scheduled to commence in Switzerland on Friday.
