Trump: U.S. Should Not Have Returned Greenland After WWII, Pushes to Reclaim Territory

In a speech to global political and business leaders in Davos, Trump labelled the decision to return Greenland to Danish sovereignty after the war “stupid,” and renewed his push for the United States to take control of the autonomous territory.

“You would be speaking German,” Trump said, referring to Greenland under German occupation, and criticised Denmark as “ungrateful” for U.S. assistance in the conflict.

Trump argued that only the United States has the capability to “secure Greenland,” describing it as strategically vital and proclaiming American power “much greater than people even understand.” He tied his remarks to recent U.S. military operations, including one in Venezuela, to underline his administration’s global reach.

Despite his forceful rhetoric, Trump said he “won’t use force” to acquire Greenland, but stressed that U.S. strategic interests justified persistent pressure for a transfer of control.

The comments come amid heightened diplomatic tensions with NATO allies. Several European leaders have pushed back against Trump’s assertions, with France proposing a NATO exercise in Greenland to reaffirm alliance cohesion and underscore support for Danish sovereignty.

Trump’s remarks have added to broader strains within the transatlantic partnership, with critics warning that the U.S. campaign for Greenland could undermine longstanding diplomatic norms and alliance unity.
