Trump Turnberry struck off Open courses list after riots as R&A share host venue concerns

Golf major The Open will no longer be held at Trump Turnberry after violent riots at the US Capitol incited by its owner, US president Donald Trump.

Tournament organisers the R&A insist the furore from the Washington rampage would drag the focus away from the tournament itself, although they admit there were no plans to hold the championship there in the near future.

The historic Ayrshire course was bought over by Trump in 2014, two years before his shock election, and last hosted the major in 2009.

Back in 2015 the R&A voted against holding a competition there after racist remarks by Trump while on the campaign trail.

And the disturbing scenes in Washington D.C. - sparked by an angry mob seeking to disrupt Congress as it finalised Joe Biden's victory in the 2020 election - have only affirmed that committment.

R&A CEO Martin Slumbers said: "We had no plans to stage any of our championships at Turnberry and will not do so in the foreseeable future.

"We will not return until we are convinced that the focus will be on the championship, the players and the course itself and we do not believe that is achievable in the current circumstances."
