US President Donald Trump said at the start of his historic summit with Russia's President Vladimir Putin in Helsinki on Monday that he thinks "the world wants to see us get along."

Trump said at the Finnish Presidential Palace that the two countries have "great opportunities," adding they have not been getting along for the past few years. He said he thinks they can have an "extraordinary relationship."

According to Trump, their discussions will involve trade, the military, missiles, nuclear weapons and China, including their "mutual friend" China's Xi Jingping.

The two leaders were seated together in a room adorned by American and Russian flags, separated by a small table.

Putin also made opening remarks in front of the press, saying: "The time has come to talk in a substantive way about our relations and problem areas of the world."

"There are enough of them for us to start paying attention," he said.

The meeting started about 45 minutes late following Putin's delayed arrival to Finland.
