U.S. President Donald Trump and his wife Melania will visit Japan on May 25-28 as state guests.
Trump plans to play golf on Sunday morning with Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and professional golfer Isao Aoki at a golf course in Chiba Prefecture.
The president is scheduled to watch sumo matches at Ryogoku Kokugikan, Tokyo, on Sunday evening, when the final day of the Summer Grand Sumo Tournament will be held, and present a special presidential cup to the winner of the tourney. He will then have dinner with Abe and his wife Akie at an izakaya pub in Tokyo.
On Monday, Trump will meet with family members of Japanese nationals abducted by North Korea, after a summit meeting with the prime minister.
The Emperor and Empress plan to meet with Trump and his wife prior to the summit meeting on Monday. The imperial couple will also visit Trump's accommodation in Tokyo on May 28, the last day of his visit schedule.
Police on full alert
Security has been tightened in central Tokyo ahead of U.S. President Donald Trump's arrival, such as by reinforcing traffic inspections. On Thursday afternoon, uniformed police officers at the Metropolitan Police Department were on the lookout for suspicious vehicles around the Imperial Palace and Kasumigaseki governmental office areas in Chiyoda Ward.
The MPD has also reinforced security at so-called soft targets where many people gather. Security dogs were dispatched to JR Akihabara Station to search for suspicious objects in coin lockers. At Haneda Airport, antiterrorism units checked the runways and garbage bins. The MPD will deploy about 18,000 officers in Tokyo alone during the visit.
