Trump teased as possible first FIFA Peace Prize winner

A new peace prize will be awarded at the World Cup draw in Washington, D.C., on Dec. 5 that recognizes "exceptional actions for peace and unity," soccer's international governing body FIFA announced Wednesday.

The big picture: FIFA president Gianni Infantino said in a statement that in an "increasingly unsettled and divided world, it's fundamental to recognize the outstanding contribution of those who work hard to end conflicts and bring people together in a spirit of peace."

The intrigue: Infantino was the second onstage guest at the America Business Forum in Miami after President Trump on Wednesday.

  • He was asked whether the first FIFA Peace Prize recipient would be "somebody that we saw earlier today?"
  • Infantino replied: "On the 5th of December, you will see."

What they're saying: At the Florida event, Infantino said he considered Trump "a close friend" and noted that he'd been "very helpful" with preparations for the World Cup, which will be held in the U.S., Canada and Mexico next year.

  • "He has such an incredible energy and this is something that I really admire," Infantino said.
  • "He does what he says. He says what he thinks. He says, actually, what many people think as well, but maybe don't dare to say. And that's why he's so successful."

Zoom out: Trump has been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize several times during his presidencies and lost out this year to Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado despite campaigning from the U.S. president and his allies.
