President Donald Trump faced criticism for enjoying a night out with Secretary of State Marco Rubio and the extended Trump family at UFC 327 while peace talks between U.S. and Iranian officials faltered.
On Saturday evening, Trump arrived at the Kaseya Center alongside Ultimate Fighting Championship CEO Dana White and several family members, including Ivanka and Tiffany Trump, to watch the light heavyweight fight between Jiri Prochazka and Carlos Ulberg.
While walking to the soundtrack of Kid Rock, the president made his way to his seat, where Secretary of State Marco Rubio was waiting, and U.S. Ambassador to India Sergio Gor sat nearby. Trump engaged with attendees, shaking hands and greeting podcaster and UFC color commentator Joe Rogan, frequently offering smiles to the cameras.
Meanwhile, Vice President JD Vance informed the public that the U.S. and Iran had failed to reach a peace agreement, leaving the conflict's future uncertain.
“It’s ridiculous!” MSNOW co-host Jonathan Capehart said Sunday morning. “He should be in the Situation Room!”
MSNOW co-host Eugene Daniels replied, “He don’t care! He’s proving that he doesn’t care!”
On social media, people mocked the juxtaposition between the president and vice president.
“The vibes here are just completely different than at the beginning of Trump 2,” Philip Bunn, a Convenant College professor, wrote.
“What a circus,” British political guru Alastair Campbell wrote.
“This montage of dueling events would be the denouement of The Godfather part VII: Corleone Nights, a straight to video release directed by a second cousin of Francis Ford Coppola’s tax attorney,” Jeremy Newberger, a filmmaker, wrote.
Peace talks between the U.S. and Iran crumbled after just one day of negotiations in Pakistan. While announcing the failed peace deal, Vance blamed Tehran for being unwilling to accept American terms.
Vance traveled to Pakistan with Jared Kushner, the president’s son-in-law, and Special Envoy Steve Witkoff for what were hailed as “make-or-break” peace talks aimed at ending the bloody six-week war and reopening the Strait of Hormuz.
But less than 24 hours later, the teams departed Islamabad empty-handed.
In remarks following the 21-hour marathon talks, the vice president suggested the sticking point had come after Tehran had failed to convince negotiators it would not seek to develop a nuclear weapon.
However, Iranian counterparts blamed those failures on the U.S.
It’s unclear what the failed negotiations mean for the future of the war in Iran. Despite Vance saying the U.S. and Iran could not come to an agreement, Trump and other military officials have asserted the U.S. has won the war.
On the way to the UFC fight in Florida, Trump told reporters it did not matter whether a deal was reached with Iran.
“Whether we make a deal or not makes no difference to me,” Trump said. “And the reason is because we’ve won.”
