U.S. President Donald Trump has sent a letter of condolence to Sakie Yokota, the mother of a young girl abducted by North Korea more than 40 years ago, expressing sympathy over the death of Sakie's husband last month.
The National Association for the Rescue of Japanese Kidnapped by North Korea (NARKN), also known as Sukuu-kai, on Wednesday announced that the letter had been received. Shigeru Yokota died on June 5 at the age of 87.
"The First Lady and I are saddened to lean of the loss of your husband Shigeru," the letter began. Trump also said, "Thanks to the tireless advocacy of you and your husband, the North Korea abduction issue remains a primary focus for Japan and the United States."
Trump also expressed commitment to the issue, saying, "We join you and your sons, Takuya and Tetsuya, in continuing this important work to finally bring Megumi home."
Sakie, 84, sent a message responding: "I sincerely thank you for the letter. I will keep doing my best to bring my daughter back."
