WASHINGTON President Donald Trump said Saturday that he would nominate Army Chief of Staff Gen. Mark Milley to replace Marine Gen. Joseph Dunford as chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
By selecting Milley for the top military post, Trump is keeping it in the hands of the ground services. Army or Marine Corps officers held the post since Oct. 1, 2011.
The last Air Force or Navy officer to hold the Joint Chiefs chairmanship was Navy Adm. Michael Mullen, who was the military's top four-star officer from October 2007 to September 2011.
