President Donald Trump stated he is seeking "vandal proof" material for the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool's floor after claiming "deranged vandals" caused a 350-foot slit.
Critics suggest the damage to the pool's lining, which has faded and accumulated debris, may be due to a botched repair job rather than vandalism.
Work crews drained the pool this week following issues with the protective coating and algae blooms that turned the water green, delaying its completion for Fourth of July celebrations.
The FBI is assisting U.S. Park Police in an investigation into the alleged vandalism, with court documents mentioning a June 9 incident involving a sharp object cutting the new liner.
David Hearn pleaded not guilty to deliberately damaging the pool, while three other individuals also pleaded not guilty to misdemeanor charges for allegedly removing paint pieces.
