President Donald Trump said Saturday that it was "perhaps illegal" that his former personal lawyer, Michael Cohen, tapped a private phone conversation between the two about a potential payment for a woman having an affair with Trump.
In a tweet, the US president called such taping "totally unheard of & perhaps illegal."
The New York Times stated that the conversation took place two months before the November 2016 election. The recordings were found when FBI raided Cohen's office in April.
The recorded conversation was about a potential payment for a former Playboy model, Karen McDougal, who claimed having an affair with Trump between 2006 - 2007.
According to those who listened to the recording, this incident does not appear to pose any judicial threat against the president as long as the payment did not take place.
Current Trump attorney Rudy Giuliani said the payment was never made and the brief recording shows Trump did nothing wrong, according to The New York Times.
"The transaction that Michael is talking about on the tape never took place, but what's important is: If it did take place, the president said it has to be done correctly and it has to be done by check" to keep a proper record of it, Giuliani said.
