Trump says Chiefs will visit White House 'very soon'

WASHINGTON _ President Donald Trump said the Kansas City Chiefs would visit the White House next week _ or soon _ during a Thursday celebration of his acquittal in the third presidential impeachment trial in history.

"And by the way, your Super Bowl champions are coming," Trump said in the middle of his speech to Republican lawmakers and supporters a day after being acquitted by a 52-48 vote.

"I think next week or soon. Very soon. And every one of them want to be here. And the coach loves us, the coach is great, Andy Reid. And every one of them want to be here."

The Chiefs would not confirm the visit, but Reid said Sunday after the Super Bowl, "If they're inviting us, I'll be there."

The White House also did not provide any details beyond the president's remarks.

Trump rescinded a White House invitation to Reid's former team, the Philadelphia Eagles, after their Super Bowl victory two years ago when several players refused to attend.

Trump had mistakenly praised the Missouri-based Chiefs for representing "the great state of Kansas" on Sunday, minutes after the team's Super Bowl victory over the San Francisco 49ers, the second in franchise history.

Trump's post prompted former Missouri Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill, now an MSNBC analyst, to deride Trump as a "stone cold idiot."

While McCaskill is no longer member of the Senate, Trump talked about her in his speech Thursday as he praised her successor, Republican Sen. Josh Hawley, one of Trump's most vocal defenders throughout the impeachment process.

Trump, who endorsed Hawley a month after he launched his campaign, claimed that he sat down with Hawley in 2017 and told his advisers "don't show me anybody else" after 10 minutes.

Trump accused McCaskill, who made attempts to appeal to Trump voters during the race, of trying to pretend to be his best friend during the campaign.
