LONDON _ British Prime Minister Theresa May will visit the United States "very shortly," President Donald Trump said without specifying a date or what they will discuss.
British newspapers reported that the visit would be as soon as next week, which would make May the first foreign leader to meet Trump since his inauguration, and that they'll discuss maintaining European unity and a trade deal. Trump mentioned May's visit during an appearance Saturday at CIA headquarters outside Washington.
May said in an interview with the Financial Times that she expects to have "very frank" talks with Trump.
Trump this month said the European Union is an instrument of German domination designed to beat the U.S. in international trade, and that he's fairly indifferent about whether the EU stays together. Trump has said leaving the 28-nation EU would be good for Britain and that he'll offer the nation a quick and "fair" trade deal.
May also said she is sure Trump "recognizes the importance and significance of NATO," according to the Financial Times. In an interview with the German newspaper Bild before his inauguration, Trump said NATO is obsolete, and urged more nations to pay their fair share toward the alliance's costs.
