- The Department of Justice is renewing efforts to prosecute James Comey, according to a CNN report on Tuesday.
- The charges against Comey were unclear, but the matter stems from a photo he posted to social media of seashells arranged on a North Carolina beach to read, "86 47," the first numbers indicating a slang term for getting rid of someone or something and the second presumed to a reference to Trump, who became the 47th president of the United States in his second term.
- “He [Comey] publicly posted a photograph on the internet social media site Instagram which depicted seashells arranged in a pattern making out ‘86 47’, which a reasonable recipient who is familiar with the circumstances would interpret as a serious expression of an intent to do harm to the President of the United States,” the indictment said.
- Last year, DoJ attorneys previously charged Comey for allegedly lying to Congress about authorizing leaks related to investigations into Donald Trump's 2016 campaign and Hillary Clinton's email server.
- A judge dismissed the prior case last fall, ruling that the prosecutor overseeing the Eastern District was illegally appointed. Comey had denied the previous accusations and declined to comment on the new charges.
