Trump’s Air Force One gift from Qatar set to be ready this summer after $400m remodel

  • The Boeing 747 jet gifted by Qatar to the U.S. last year is scheduled to be ready for service as a temporary presidential plane by this summer, having completed modifications and flight testing.
  • The jet underwent a reported $400 million overhaul to install top-secret communications equipment and sweep for spy technology, while largely retaining its lavish Qatari interior, including plush couches and faux library bookcases.
  • The acceptance of the jet sparked controversy, with critics citing national security risks, potential violations of constitutional prohibitions on foreign gifts, and ethical concerns due to Qatar's alleged support for U.S. adversaries.
  • The president selected the new red, white, and blue exterior design for the aircraft, which will feature fewer refrigerators and a curtain to separate media members from administration officials, unlike existing Air Force One models.
  • A president previously defended the gift against critical media coverage, clarifying it was for the U.S. Air Force/Defense Department, not him personally, and the jet is reportedly slated for transfer to his presidential library foundation after he leaves office.
