E Jean Carroll, the columnist who has accused Donald Trump of rape, claims she was fired from her job at ELLE magazine after her allegation became public.

Ms Carroll has alleged that Mr Trump raped her in the 1990s after the two encountered each other in a Manhattan luxury department store and went into a dressing room. Mr Trump has denied the allegation. Ms Carroll has, in turn, sued the US president for claiming that she was lying.

She tweeted on Tuesday: “Because Trump ridiculed my reputation, laughed at my looks, & dragged me through the mud, after 26 years, ELLE fired me.”

Referring to her longtime advice column, Ask E. Jean, she added: “I don’t blame Elle. It was the great honor of my life writing Ask E Jean. I blame@realdonaldtrump.”

According to court papers, ELLE magazine ended Ms Carroll’s contract in December.

Ms Carroll has said many readers shied from seeking her advice after the president called her a liar.

Her tweet came the same day her lawyers told a court that he’s allegedly trying “to stop the truth from ever coming out” by attempting to delay her defamation lawsuit and her effort to get his DNA.

The Independent has contacted Hearst, which publishes ELLE, as well as Mr Trump’s lawyer for comment.
