SAN DIEGO _ President Donald Trump intends to nominate retired two-star admiral and San Diego native James McPherson to be the next Army undersecretary, the White House announced in a statement Thursday.
McPherson, 66, was the Judge Advocate General of the Navy when he retired in 2006.
He has been the general counsel of the Army since the Senate confirmed him in December 2017. He also has been the acting Army undersecretary since July, when Army Secretary Mark Esper was nominated to head the Pentagon and Undersecretary Ryan McCarthy became acting Army secretary.
McPherson graduated from San Diego State University with a degree in public administration in 1977. He earned a law degree at the University of San Diego in 1981, his Navy biography says. He holds a master's degree in law from the Judge Advocate General's School of the Army.
In addition to serving in the Navy JAG Corps, McPherson also served three years enlisted in the Army as a military policeman.
