Trump news – live: Biden picks Harris as running mate as president falsely claims his 'polls going up like a rocket ship'

Democratic Party candidate Joe Biden is expected to announce his running mate imminently in a joint virtual fundraiser.

President Donald Trump meanwhile claims that he could have beaten founding father George Washington in an election. He also incorrectly described his polls as 'going up like a rocket ship'. The latest Monmouth University poll has him trailing former vice president Biden by 10 points — outside the margin of error.

The president also once again claimed on Tuesday that Covid-19 tests produced “more cases” as he denounced criticism over the so-called “China Plague!”, which he admitted had altered his relationship with Chinese president Xi Jinping in an interview with Fox Sports Radio.

No Big Ten football this fall

The Big Ten won’t be playing football this fall because of concerns about Covid-19.

The move comes six day after the conference that includes historic programs such as Ohio State, Michigan, Nebraska and Penn State had released a revised conference-only schedule that it hoped would help it navigate a fall season with potential Covid-19 disruptions.

Susan Rice could be Biden’s VP pick, but is her Benghazi connection a problem?

Susan Rice, the potential Democratic pick for vice president, is considered one of the country’s leading experts on foreign policy. But while her experience will count in her favour, it will also give Republicans a clear plan of attack leading up to the election in November.

The foreign policy expert was nominated as the ambassador of the United Nations by President Barack Obama, a nomination the Senate at the time unanimously confirmed.
But her time as ambassador of the United Nations – from 2009 to 2013 – and then later national security adviser to Mr Obama, until 2017, has been called into question by Republicans – specifically her role in the Benghazi attacks.

Danielle Zoellner reports.

Joe Biden announced his 1972 Senate candidacy at the hotel and celebrated his victory there. It is also where he held his last in-person campaign event before the coronavirus pandemic.

There are a number of potential events the setup could be used for — the announcement of Mr Biden’s running mate, expected imminently; pre-taping speeches for next week’s convention; or the former vice president formally accepting the Democratic Party nomination, which he will be doing from Delaware.
